How to Add Decimal Places for a Currency

Learn how to increase the number of decimal places for a currency in SAP ERP for SAP HCM functionalities.

To illustrate how and why you would want to add or modify the number of decimals to a currency in SAP ERP HCM system currency tables, I am using two scenarios.

Note
In a productive system, you should not delete the currencies in use or change the decimal places. Doing so could make amounts in documents already posted incorrect or invalid. This setting change should be made only during a new SAP implementation and should not be changed after go-live.

Thanks, Vishwa, for your response.

As per my experience and knowledge, the setting we do in the path mentioned should be done only when you start a new/fresh implementation and not when you have already implemented other modules. The SAP system already provides an explicit warning in the table V_CURX which reads as follows: β€œIn a productive system, you must not delete the currencies in use or change the decimal places. This could make amounts in documents already posted incorrect or invalid.” This table is universal and when changed affects all modules, including HCM, FI/CO, etc. Hope this clarifies.

Hi Manimala,

While the coverage of the article with respect to additional decimal places for a currency is good, as pointed out by you, since the adding of entries into V_CURX is a cross-client settings, one has to be very careful about the settings.

From my personal experience, adding decimal places has resulted in database tables relating to MM (Inventory Management) becoming redundant and we were stuck as we were unable to do a GRN for some consignments. This is because MM-related tables can accommodate a maximum of 13 places including decimals.

My question in this regard is, when you do changes to the system through IMG Path - Personnel Management > Personnel Administration > Payroll Data > Basic Pay > Define hourly rates with several decimal places > Decimal places for currencies, does this impact only HCM data alone or does it affect the Financials also?

Do let us know your views, as there seems to be a long-lasting effect on FI module whenever we increase the decimal places.

Regards,
Vishwa
