With Adobe Flash Islands, you can build effective user interfaces in SAP, employing Rich Internet application frameworks such as Adobe Flex. Find out how Flash Islands can integrate with Web Dynpro ABAP and how to set it up in your SAP system.
Key Concept
Adobe Flex provides an environment in which you can create Rich Internet applications. Adobe Flash Islands, based on Adobe Flex, enables you to embed rich client rendering and HTML rendering into the Web Dynpro framework. Adobe Flash Islands for Web Dynpro ABAP is available for SAP NetWeaver 7.0 with SAP enhancement package 1 and later. Adobe Flash Islands for Web Dynpro for Java is available from SAP NetWeaver Composition Environment 7.1 with SAP enhancement package 1 and later.

Internet applications have evolved from what were simple HTML pages that run on Web browsers to the ones built today using the latest Web 2.0 patterns that run on different clients’ platforms. HTML, in its latest version 5, is still being extensively used and has tested to be an effective language for building user interfaces (UIs), but it has some limitations around media integration. Some of the limitations of HTML have been addressed by Java script, applets, and ActiveX, but those aren’t enough to meet the increasing demand for usability of Internet applications.

To address such demands, an application that meets the requirements without compromising performance and quality is necessary. Rich Internet application (RIA) frameworks, which are a set of languages and tools that enable you to develop rich UIs for Web applications, is designed to meet these requirements.

Adobe Flash Islands is one tool that you can use to develop such RIA frameworks. I’ll explain how Flash Islands works and integrates with Web Dynpro ABAP and then discuss how you can set up Flash Islands in three steps. Flash Islands for Web Dynpro ABAP is available for SAP NetWeaver 7.0, SAP enhancement package 1 and later.
