Disciplined Testing Is the Key to Success for Large SAP Rollouts

This guide can serve as the basis for your organization’s regression testing during a large global rollout.
Key Concept

System- and Web-based Roadmaps based on ASAP methodology are available in transaction RMMAIN for global template implementation projects. They contain standard SAP implementation methodology, including testing-related guidelines for different project types (e.g., implementations, rollouts, and upgrades). They also contain milestones that you can follow throughout your project. Roadmaps are integrated in the project administration phase of an SAP Solution Manager project, and you can also view them in display mode if they are not used in a project.

When you manage a global SAP implementation, you can automate multi-location regression testing to reduce the overall project execution cycle. The following tips are a result of my experience as the project lead for the testing of a global rollout project. It included multiple locations across the globe and involved major SAP functionality such as sales and distribution, materials management, warehouse management, SAP ERP Financials, SAP Controlling, and production planning.

The following are the four phases in a global template implementation project I found relevant for planning and executing tests:

  • Global Program Preparation Phase

  • Global Business Blueprint Phase

  • Global Realization Phase

  • System Integration Testing Phase

The steps in this article were performed in SAP Solution Manager 7.0, but you can use this method with SAP Solution Manager 3.2 and 4.0 as well.
