Understand the most important conceptual aspects of template management as driven by SAP Solution Manager.
Key Concept
Template management allows organizations with multi-site SAP installations to efficiently manage their business processes across geographical distances, from initial template definition to template implementation and template optimization (such as in a global rollout). Template management helps you harmonize and synchronize business processes throughout your enterprise and consequently stay compliant with internal or external standards and requirements. At the same time, it also helps you minimize implementation efforts through centralized template design, build, and testing.

Template management is a dedicated process found in application life cycle management (ALM), an Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL)-driven SAP model that provides processes, tools, services, and an organizational model you can use to manage both SAP and non-SAP solutions throughout a complete application life cycle. The ALM model spans six different phases:

  • Requirements: Gather requirements for new or adapted applications based on your business needs
  • Design: Translate requirements into feature specifications (in other words, the Business Blueprint)
  • Build and test: Prepare application and operational model for deployment
  • Deploy: Incorporate an operational model in the existing IT environment and install the application on top of the operational model
  • Operate: Deliver the service required by the business
  • Optimize: Analyze the results of the service level performance and act on it

With template management, your company can profit in a variety of ways: SAP Solution Manager serves as a single source of template definition, implementation, and operative use. All process-related information (e.g., documentation, configuration, test material, and results) is centrally stored and accessible. It enforces business process standardization and compliance throughout the company. Using the GlobalASAP methodology, which can be enriched with your company-specific standards and guidelines, you can transfer leading business practices into all lines of your business. Moreover, the reuse of templates in implementation projects ensures the investments made in central template development and minimizes investments for redundant process development. Finally, the compare and adjust functionality assists you in adjusting your processes between different life cycle phases.
