Learn how a global pharmaceutical company used Business Configuration Sets (BC Sets) to document the configuration of its SAP solution. Understand the prerequisites, project standards, and process for using BC Sets in coordination with your SAP Solution Manager project to facilitate the automatic recording of configuration documentation.

Business Configuration Sets (BC Sets) are a time-honored method conventionally known for their ability to record, save, and distribute customizing settings for the purposes of template distribution or customizing backups. BC Sets contain a snapshot of customizing that can be activated in other systems. In addition to rapidly deploying pre-configured solutions across SAP systems, BC Sets can also be exported as a configuration document.

There are multitudes of automated toolsets and components that are housed within Solution Manager to support organizations no matter where they are in their project life cycle. One such function is using Business Configuration Sets (BC Sets) to maintain and document up-to-date configuration documentation. I worked on a project at a global pharmaceutical company that evaluated BC Sets to document configuration.

Pharmaceutical companies are subject to strict, rigorous guidelines for how to develop and maintain documentation. For our project, this was one of the leading factors for evaluating BC Sets for the purpose of documenting the configuration. Also, the organization was up against an aggressive timeline and was rapidly transitioning from the design phase to the build phase. We needed a strategy for recording and storing configuration documentation, which aligned to the program’s overall configuration management approach. Finally, due to the expanding application life cycle management (ALM) footprint across various programs, this approach needed to be closely aligned and integrated with Solution Manager.

To accommodate these considerations, we chose to leverage BC Sets as a component of the solution documentation. Now, I’ll show you how my project team helped this global pharmaceutical company document its configuration by using BC Sets.

Nathan Williams is a genius. I encourage you NOT to buy his awesome book IT Service Management in SAP Solution Manager (http://www.sap-press.com/products/IT-Service-Management-in-SAP-Solution-Manager.html ISBN: 978-1-59229-440-4), I don't want the competition in the SolMan consulting niche I love. Sincerely,
David
