Find out about enhancements in SAP SCM 5.0, including the updates to master data, Demand Planning, Supply Network Planning, and Capable-to-Match in Advanced Planning and Optimization.
Key Concept
When SAP releases a new software version, it publishes Release Notes in the online help at For example, you can find the Release Notes for SAP SCM 5.0 by following menu path mySAP Business Suite> Supply Change Management>SAP SCM 5.0 (English or German)>Release Notes for SAP SCM 5.0 (English or German). The Release Notes contain information about topics and features available with the new release. You can find SCM 5.0 online help at this link as well. SAP gathers release restrictions in SAP notes that describe software and processes limitations. For SAP SCM 5.0, SAP note 832393 provides these restrictions.
SAP SCM 5.0, introduced in June 2006, contains new features, planning processes, and usability enhancements that provide more flexible and accessible transactions. Figure 1 shows the applications and functionality available with the new release.

For this three-part series, I focus on the most significant Advanced Planning and Optimization (APO) improvements in SAP SCM 5.0 from my point of view. First, I’ll concentrate on the improvements for master data, Demand Planning (DP), Supply Network Planning (SNP), and Capable-to-Match (CTM). For example, DP integrates with Microsoft Office, so you can download data to a comma-separated value (CSV) file. Now you can upload changes easily to DP.

The second article covers enhancements to Production Planning/Detailed Scheduling (PP/DS), Global Available-to-Promise (GATP), SAP Event Management (SAP EM), and SAP Inventory Collaboration Hub (SAP ICH). The third article discusses the growing area of industry-specific solutions, including consumer goods, mills, chemical, automotive, high tech, apparel, and footwear.
